“After the War” by Mary Wedderburn Cannan and “War Girls” by Jessie Pope Find two poems that speak very strongly to you. Read those two poems again several times and take notes on what causes you to be drawn to them. Is it something in the content? Is it an emotional pull? Is it a moral cause? Is it a deep sense of dread or wrong that you are prompted to feel? Something else? Try to identify what it is in the content, specifically, that pulls you in when you
read each poem. Then, see if you can write what the poem is about in your own words.
Next, take note of the sounds in each poem, the size of each, the rhythms, the rhymes (if there are any), the people in the poems–whatever it is that makes the pieces come alive. Now that you have your notes from the content and from the structure or technique of the poems, put your thoughts together in a single, minimum 250-word response. Organize and refine your notes so that they become your personal commentary on the poems.
