The U.S. is now going through a radical transformation in identifying
its true identity built on foundations of justice, truth and liberty.

Thomas Paine argued that all men being originally equals, no one by
birth could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual
preference to all others for ever (Paine 104).
Paine feels that Englands King and his parasites (Paine 107) is
corrupt and deserves no praise for the establishment of America and
that there is no advantage that this continent can reap by being
connected with Great Britain (Paine 107).
Paine was a believer that a government of our own is our natural right
(Paine 108).

Suffrage was also a hot topic and one that Americans felt strongly
about. In a letter written to the Maryland Gazette, it was argued that
it is an insult to common sense to say that a government can be formed
by the authority of the people only, when nearly half of them are
excluded (Maryland Gazette 115) from the election process. The go
further to argue that if part of the people should engross the power
of electing legislators for the whole community is the grossest
injustice that can be imagined (Maryland Gazette 115).

Further, America was establishing itself as a free country. William
Manning said that government is the most free that causes the greatest
sum or degree of individual happiness in this world with the least
national expense (Manning 149).

American also opened its doors to the rest of the world. It created
opportunities for new labor and immigrants to come share in the
American dream. A New York Times article stated that America is a new
world to them oppression, bitter poverty behind here, hope, freedom,
and a chance to work, and food to the laboring man (New York Times
175).
