The paper will be based on your understanding of the ethical principles that correspond with the chapter you decide to go with. For example, if you choose chapter 10, you would use Singer in your work. Remember, that after you make your argument, listing your claims and backup, that you will also write briefly about what the opponent to your position might say. Then shoot that person down with a source of your own, supporting your original position. Then write your conclusion summing up the process.
I chose the chapter on world hunger and poverty. Below is what I wrote for my one page argument for this chapter.
I understand that there are hungry people in the world and that it is our duty to help those in need, but I feel that we should help those in need in our own country before we reach out to help the rest of the world. Let’s start with the many veterans who served our country and now find themselves homeless and hungry. Or we could start right here in XXXXX County with our own neighbors who struggle. I do feel bad for those living in underdeveloped nations that don’t have the luxuries most of us have, but the underdeveloped nations (as I learned from an Environmental Science class) are the ones with the highest birthrates and that is just causing more and more mouths to feed. Instead of taking the necessary measures to try and help themselves they are making it harder on themselves. “Nations with the highest incidence of poverty also have the highest birthrates. One report estimates that more than 90% of the world’s total population growth between now and the year 2025 will occur in developing countries. Providing aid to people in such countries will only allow more of them to survive and reproduce, placing even greater demands on the world’s limited food supply.” (Andre and Velasquez)

The case against helping other countries includes the Lifeboat Argument, the Effectiveness Argument, the Libertarian Argument, the Libertarian Argument, the Particularity Argument, and the Liberal State Argument.
